Re-encode a JPEG as WebP
Canvas (or the browser encoder) writes a WebP that is usually smaller than the JPEG at a similar visual quality. This is still a lossy generation: you cannot recover the original JPEG bitstream.
Web performance vs archival masters
Use WebP for hero images on sites that no longer need IE11. Keep a master JPEG/PNG in backup. PNG to WebP is the path when the source has transparency.

Encoding requires a browser that can produce WebP. Huge images are limited. Files stay on your device.

Is WebP always smaller than JPEG?
Usually for photos, not always for already-tiny JPEGs. Compare file size after convert.
Will Safari open the result?
Modern Safari supports WebP. If you must support ancient clients, keep JPEG.
Does this strip EXIF?
Re-encoding typically drops camera metadata. Assume GPS and camera tags are gone.
