Unicode subscripts for formulas and indices
Supported digits and a handful of letters map to subscript code points (H₂O, aₙ). This is for inline chemistry and math in places without TeX. It is not a full molecular editor and not Word’s equation field.
What stays at baseline
Most consonants have no Unicode subscript. Those characters are left unchanged, which is why long words look uneven. Superscript Generator is the raised counterpart. Slash text uses combining marks instead.
Copy-paste into LMS and chat
Some fonts lack subscript glyphs; you will see boxes. For graded chemistry, instructors may still want proper formula tools. Local conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Why didn’t “chloride” all go subscript?
Only a small subscript alphabet exists in Unicode. Use it for indices and numerals, not whole words.
Can I mix sub and super in one formula?
Convert pieces separately, then paste them together. There is no chemical parser on this page.
Is this the same as HTML `<sub>`?
HTML sub is styling. These are different characters, which is why they survive in plain-text bios.
